Court wants early meeting of panel on media

New Delhi, March 7 (IANS) The Delhi High Court Wednesday ordered an early meeting of a committee constituted by it to frame guidelines on media reports related to children.

The court also asked a lawyer, appointed to assist it, to provide a copy of code of conduct on reporting to every member of the committee before its meeting.

The division bench of Acting Chief Justice A.K. Sikri and Justice Rajiv Sahai Endlaw told the Delhi government to inform the members about the constitution of the panel.

The court earlier directed the government to constitute a committee on a plea that said that guidelines should be framed to regulate disclosure of details about children in cases like that of baby Falak.

The court had taken a suo motu cognizance of a letter filed by a lawyer who sought framing of guidelines to regulate media reporting.

Falak, who is two years old, was admitted to All India Institute of Medical Sciences here Jan 18 with severe head injuries and human bite marks all over her face.

The committee comprises the presiding officer of the Juvenile Justice Board, representatives of the central and Delhi governments, the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights, the Press Council of India, media and NGOs.

The court also allowed the News Broadcasters Association, that represents 46 news and current affairs TV channels, to become a party in the case.
