More tourists opting for visa on arrival in India

New Delhi, Nov 8 (IANS) The number of foreign tourists opting for visa on arrival (VoA) rose by over 26 percent during January-October this year compared to the same period last year, an official said here Thursday.

A total number of 12,273 VoAs were issued this year as compared to 9,739 during the corresponding period of 2011 - a growth of 26 percent, a tourism ministry official said.

In order to attract more foreign tourists to India, the government in 2010 launched a VoA scheme for countries like Finland, Japan, Luxembourg, New Zealand and Singapore.

In 2011, the scheme was extended to accommodate six more countries - Cambodia, Indonesia, Vietnam, the Philippines, Laos and Myanmar.
