Mass protests if retail FDI decision not reversed: AITUC

Mumbai, Nov 29 (IANS) The All India Trade Union Congress (AITUC) Thursday demanded that the government reverse its decision on FDI in retail and threatened to launch mass protests against it.

"AITUC calls upon its membership and masses at large to plunge into mass action and organise 'Rail Roko' and 'Rasta Roko' agitations on Dec 18 and 19 if the decision to bring in FDI in retail is not reversed," said AITUC's Maharashtra unit secretary Sukumar Damle.

At its ongoing 40th National Conference, the AITUC unanimously adopted the resolution strongly condemning the decision of the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government to allow FDI in multi-brand retail trade.

"The move will adversely affect nearly five crore people of their livelihood in India at a time when unemployment is at its peak," Damle said.

He said that on Dec 28, the AITUC will participate in 'March to Parliament' organised by all trade unions and will also participate in two-day nationwide stir against the move in February next year.
