Sukhbir Badal leads with biggest margin

Chandigarh, March 6 (IANS) If there is one way of leading by example, Shiromani Akali Dal president Sukhbir Singh Badal has certainly shown that. As results for the 117-member assembly were declared Tuesday, Sukhbir Badal had the highest victory margin among all candidates.

Badal won by a margin of 50,246 votes against Congress dissident Hans Raj Josan.

The second highest margin was achieved by Sukhbir's brother-in-law, wife Harsimrat Badal's brother, Bikram Singh Majithia from the Majitha seat. He won by a margin of 47,581 votes.

Ironically, Sukhbir's brother-in-law Adesh Pratap Singh Kairon, who is married to Sukhbir's sister, returned with the second lowest margins Tuesday.

Kairon managed to win his traditional Patti seat in Punjab's border area of Tarn Taran by just 59 votes.

The lowest victory margin was on the Phillaur seat where the Akali Dal candidate won by only 31 votes.

Other small margins were at Jagraon (206) and Ferozepur-rural (162). Both were won by Akali Dal candidates.

Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal won his Lambi assembly seat by a margin of over 24,700 votes. He beat his cousin, Maheshinder Badal of the Congress. The chief minister's younger brother, Gurdas Badal, 81, finished a poor third on this seat and forfeited his security deposit also.

Punjab Congress president Amarinder Singh, who was hopeful of the Congress returning to power and was "surprised" at the results Tuesday, won his Patiala assembly seat by over 42,300 votes.

Raninder Singh, the son of Amarinder and union Minister of State for External Affairs Preneet Kaur, lost the Samana seat by over 6,900 votes.

Former chief minister Rajinder Kaur Bhattal of the Congress won from the Lehra seat by over 3,300 votes but her son-in-law, Vikram Singh Bajwa, lost the Sahnewal seat by over 21,000 votes.

Badal had led the Akali Dal campaign from the front, taking on the Congress and the anti-incumbency factor. The Akali Dal-BJP have created history by coming to power for a second consecutive term - a first by any party in the state.
